A Note from RBA's President -
"The True Meaning of RBA"

RBA 2009 Heritage Bakery Road Tour Visits Rossmoor Pastries, Los Angeles
(Left to Right) Janice Ahlgren, Charlie Feder, RBA President Richard Reinwald CMB, Gregory Reinwald and Thomas Reinwald

The simple act of the 2009 RBA Heritage Road Tour has caused a catharsis in my view of RBA. When talking to bakers, suppliers and media I always spoke about programs and benefits, about conventions and education sessions or insurance discounts. As I diagnose the meaning of RBA I realize these are merely symptoms and not the heart. Although these are all very important activities and goals for the RBA, I have come upon a very different pathway to RBA importance.

I feel the true meaning and purpose of the RBA can be summed up in six words; Community, Inspiration, Innovation, Networking, Support and Representation.

First and foremost is a sense of community . Bakers across the south have welcomed my boys with open arms and warm hospitality. From the heart of a father I say thank you.

I once dropped a wedding cake 40 miles and 1 hour before the reception. A nearby bakery, who I didn't even know opened their shop to me and allowed me to repair and restore the cake, community in the most basic form.

Inspiration is Charlie Feder of Rossmoor Pastries saying, “Show no fear”; Porto's Bakery in Los Angeles starting out of a kitchen and growing to a multi-million dollar sales figure. Or maybe it's witnessing the baking struggles of 17-21 year olds at the Skills USA Baking under a competitive situation. An inspiring event I just had the privilege of judging.

Innovation is new product marketing where the techniques and trials often are developed at the retail bakery level as cost and flexibility are difficult at the large companies. It is Werner Simon seeing something in Europe and testing its adaptability to American sensibilities.

Support is being your corporate board. Creating and monitoring opportunities such as our cookie poll that no one bakery could muster. We are a liaison with a voice that our allied community recognizes.

Networking – The simple act of interacting with bakers across the country. We are being afforded a wonderful opportunity today in new communication techniques that makes connecting with bakers and your customers easier and more effective. Did you “tweet” to RetailBakers on Twitter today?

Last but not least is representation . No matter how you feel about it or which side of the aisle you are on, governments at local, state and national levels are becoming involved in your business. RBA is a powerful non-profit voice that represents the “Mom & Pop” main street business. Always remember politicians love us and need our support.

This, to me, is the heart and soul of the RBA. How do you feel? E-mail me.

RBA Supports Skills USA

The Skills USA competition took place in Kansas City, June 25-26, 2009. All participants received a Certificate of Appreciation from RBA and a one-year, free, student membership.

RBA's Retail Baking Industry Foundation, whose primary mission is education, awarded the winners in the Skills USA post secondary level competition with free registration to the American Retail Bakery Exposition (ARBE), airfare (travel), two nights hotel stay at the Westin, and two tickets to the Awards Reception sponsored by the California Raisin Marketing Board.

"RBA's American Retail Bakery Exposition (ARBE) is a beneficial educational opportunity for students who want to learn and grow in the baking industry," said Paul Sapienza, Secretary, RBA Foundation Board.

Additionally, the first, second and third place winners received a $300, $200 and $100 American Express gift card, respectively.

"The enthusiasm of the students is contagious," said RBA President Richard Reinwald, CMB, and past judge of the competition. "These students have sought education in pastry and baking after high school, with some baking experience required by their school. RBA, through its Foundation, maintaints a presence in this educational setting."

Kudos to former RBA Board member, Pete Fendt of Quality Pastry Shop, Fargo, ND, who, through his diligent work, made this year's contest a success.

RBA Affiliate News from...
Greater Cincinnati Retail Bakers Association

KIDS DIVE INTO PIES AT CONEY ISLAND

At 4 pm, Sunday, June 28, at Coney Island's Picnic area the crowd gathered to watch children from all over the tri state area, compete for the title of "2009 Champion Pie Eater." This annual event sponsored by the Greater Cincinnati Retail Bakers Association has continued for the past 17 years, with each contest being more competitive. Girls and boys ages 8-12 were chosen at their local neighborhood retail bakery to compete in a “Eat-Off” for the championship.

“Kids get on their swim suits, and literally dive into the pies in search of the treasure,” says Greg Gottenbusch of Servatii Pastry Shop, and President of the Bakers Association.

The Whipped Cream Pie has inside a secret object which they must find without the use of hands, it runs in three heats, with the winner from each heat competing again in the finals, by that time everyone is covered with whipped cream, a very tasty mess. First second and third place receive money and all receive a trophy, plus the contestants are treated to a day at Coney with their family, including dinner at the Bakers Association Picnic Site.

Besides the pies there was a big display of brownies and cookies and the individual bakeries have their annual brownie and cookie competition.

For more information, contact Mary Ann Acree at (859) 727-4146.
