"In a time when Americans found themselves split and searching for answers in Presidential candidates, a simple cookie became symbolic of the hearts and souls of a nation. Nothing more than a mixture of sugar and flour, yet loud enough to be heard with every scrumptious bite. Like the piece of fabric that hangs on our flagstaffs when we are proud, and the ribbons that hang on our chests when we are sad, this Sugar Cookie became representative of a nation that was crying out for change.  The day after the election it will once more be nothing more than a tasty treat that brings smiles to millions of children, but on November 4 , 2008 it showed us how all Americans felt.  The Sugar Cookie... capable of predicting the outcome of this election while giving all those who voted a moment of bliss to enjoy their participation. The mere taste of a Sugar Cookie from this point forward will always remind me of how proud I am to be an American!"

About the Cookie Poll

The Retail Bakers of America (RBA) began its Presidential Election Cookie Poll in 2004. Participating bakeries baked and decorated cookies to represent both the Democrat and Republican candidates. Using political party mascots, colors, and the nominee names, each cookie sold represented one vote for the candidates. People of all ages could vote, and as many times as they liked. In 2004, the election cookie poll accurately predicted the next president of the United States - President George W. Bush.

For RBA's 2008 Election Cookie Poll, member bakeries are offering cookies with caricatures of Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain to their local communities. Some have added cookies with Vice Presidential nominees, Sen. Joe Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin, due to their popularity this year.

The Retail Bakers of America tabulated cookie sales of the presidential candidates each week, and results have been posted on this site. Bookmark this webpage and check back each week to see an updated listing of participating bakeries and snapshots of their offerings.
